Pre - Ordering
Well there’s an inherent danger in Christmas… and that is the tons of time I’ve spent reading all my books that I got! I have read four books in the last 2 - 3 days. Some of it, too, is being sick with the head -cold/flu/something I picked up, but the rest is just enjoying everything I picked up. I’m currently almost done with Ender’s Game. It’s apparently sacrilege that I, as a sci-fi fan, have never read it. After being mostly through it, I agree. It’s good… even if I have a tough time accepting the age of the protagonists, even if they are geniuses. Anyway… off topic.
I want to talk about pre-ordering of books. With the market as it is, publishers are being wary on what they’re printing and buying. You’ve heard a lot of bloggers tell you to go out and buy books, and I’ve done that as well. But there’s something I’ve never done, that I decided to try out with George RR Martin’s and Anton Strout’s next books and that is Pre-Ordering. I always found it kinda silly, after all… the book would soon be in my bookstore, so why should I go pre-order it. But there’s a really good reason, and that is letting the publisher know there’s interest in the book, the genre and the author. You’re helping both authors in that genre who want to get published and assuring the editor to keep paying the current author better figures to acquire his book. Which, of course, is good for those of us wanting to get published.
Anyway so go pre-order a couple things. I definitely recommend Anton’s Deader Still. I truly think that his Dead to Me is one of the best Urban Fantasy novels I’ve read in the last year, it’s witty, filled with surprises and just a dash of romance, without being overboard. I tend to prefer my romance much tamer and my mystery factor much higher, and he has that! (Oh Unfallen Dead by Mar del Franco is another up on my MUST BUYs… it’s another great series.)
